Stewartry Council of Voluntary Service

Board Members

Derek Smith

I hope to contribute to Stewartry CVS some of my 52 years’ experience of managing both large & small business’, involving me in all aspects both operational and strategic.

I am currently involved with Kirkcudbright Sailing Club, the Rotary Club and the Jazz Festival.  For many years I have taken a keen interest in both local community and charitable groups.

Des Hadnett

I am Des Hadnett and since retiring from the Royal Air Force in 2003, I have been the Secretary of Balmaghie Community Council.  In addition, since 2010 I have been a member of the local village hall Management Committee: Balmaghie Public Hall, Laurieston.  I have been on the Board of Directors of SCVS since 2010 and appointed to Vice-chair in 2014.

On a personal note I am keen to champion the aims and objectives of SCVS in their work to develop the aspirations of individuals and groups living and working throughout communities within the Stewartry.

Alan Rumble

I am Alan Rumble and since retiring from full time teaching I have enjoyed several different jobs ranging from running a small mail order plant nursery to farming a 25 acre Smallholding. I finally retired from teaching in 2007 to concentrate on my other career as a Bookkeeper, Payroll, and PAYE & VAT to a wide range of local Rural Businesses. I am currently Chairman of Balmaclellan Community Council.

In addition, I am the interim Chairman of the Glenkens & District Trust and Chairman of the Dumfries & Galloway Day Centres Network.   I have been on the Board of Directors of SCVS since 2011 and appointed to Treasurer in 2014.  I am keen to further the aims and objectives of SCVS in their work, to assist in the development of the services offered to individuals and groups throughout the communities of the Stewartry.

 Maggie Hopkins

I am Maggie Hopkins and have been a director of SCVS for around 10 years. On leaving university in 1966 I taught for 4 years in a small boarding school in North Yorkshire. This experience led me into social work and I spent the next 20 years in SouthYorkshire working largely with children and families. Taking early retirement in 1990, I ran a small business for 5 years with my second husband.

We re-located to Dumfries & Galloway in 1995 and gradually both became involved in a variety of community activities which led to my being nominated by Crocketford Community Initiative (of which I was secretary for a number of years) to the board of SCVS. We moved to Dalbeattie from Crocketford in 2013 and I am still finding my feet – and possibly some kind of community role - in this much larger neighbourhood.

Leon McCaig

I am Leon McCaig, an ex Mathematics teacher, ex-trade unionist, ex-D&G Councillor, ex-Kirkcudbright Community Councillor, in fact just about ex-everything but for ex-ceptional or ex-cellent.

My first association with SCVS was in 1995-99 as a D&G Councillor and then as a Board member from 1999 to the present day.  I am now Convener of Trustees of the Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival.

My experience convinces me of the need for strong voices, varied talents and a range of expertise within the voluntary sector and within bodies such as SCVS   working to support and develop groups, organisations and individuals within our Stewartry communities.

Ann Gault

I have been a member of the Management Committee of Stewartry Unit Sea Cadet Corps since early 80’s, still serving. I have been involved with the SCVS from its early days, in its different structures, and while I was working as a volunteer with Digital TV I was invited to let my name go forward for membership of SCVS Board and have been a member ever since. I also served for several years as a member of the old Health Council. I sit on two committees of the Glasgow and Galloway Diocese of the Scottish Episcopal Church, wrongly styled by some as ‘The English Church’. From 1986 I worked with my husband as secretary and PA in his engineering consultancy.
